Base paper is the fundamental part of white sublimation transfer paper, just as important as the foundation of a house.

The base paper of sublimation transfer paper is usually made of natural fibers or synthetic fibers. Natural fiber

In terms of artificial fibers, there are also applications such as polyester fibers. Polyester fibers have good stability and can maintain the shape and structure of paper during heat transfer printing.

The material selection of the base paper will affect the performance of the entire transfer paper. If the ink absorption of the base paper is poor, the ink cannot be well absorbed during thermal sublimation transfer printing, which may result in blurry transfer patterns or uneven colors. If the strength of the base paper is not sufficient, the paper may be damaged during the transfer printing process due to pulling or high-temperature treatment, affecting the normal progress of transfer printing.

2. Thickness

The thickness of the base paper is an important parameter. Generally speaking, the thickness of the base paper for sublimation transfer paper is within a certain range. If the base paper is too thin, it may not be able to withstand the pressure during the transfer printing process

Force and heat can easily cause wrinkles or ruptures. Thin base paper may also cause ink penetration

On the contrary, if the base paper is too thick, it will increase costs on the one hand and may affect the efficiency of transfer printing on the other hand. Because thicker base paper may pose certain obstacles during heat transfer, resulting in longer transfer time and potentially causing less vibrant colors in the transfer process. Usually, the thickness of the base paper for sublimation transfer paper is adjusted according to different application scenarios, such as in the production process

When transferring clothes, a relatively thin base paper may be chosen, while when making larger flags or banners for transfer printing, a slightly thicker base paper may be used to ensure its strength.

 

3. Surface characteristics

The surface smoothness of the base paper has a significant impact on the transfer printing effect. A base paper with a rough surface can cause uneven ink distribution, as the flow and penetration of ink on the rough surface are hindered. However, a base paper with a surface that is too smooth may result in poor ink adhesion, making it easier to transfer ink during the transfer process

The phenomenon of ink sliding or gathering occurs in the middle. And the surface smoothness of the base paper is also crucial. So manufacturers producing base paper will adopt advanced papermaking processes, strictly controlling the thickness uniformity and surface smoothness of the paper. Generally speaking, the thickness error of high-quality sublimation transfer paper is controlled within a very small range, and the surface smoothness can also reach a high standard to ensure that the ink can be evenly adhered and transferred during transfer.

The surface of the base paper may also undergo some special treatments, such as coating treatment. Some base papers have a thin coating on their surface, which can improve their ink absorption and adhesion.
